And lastly, there's tumblr.

I wanted to check out one more social media site for my exploration. tumblr is a social media site that lets users be creative without the pressure of advertising.  I can totally see why this is the social media that my son (a video game design major/graphic art minor) would choose for the one social media he is going to use.  You can blog on it (like blogspot), you can post thoughts (like Twitter), you can post pictures and art (like Instagram) and you can post videos (like Tik Tok and You Tube).   I checked out what was trending on tumblr and while all very interesting, the format for me was overwhelming.   I also read this article  and was really impressed with the concept of tumblr and how has been maintained.   I like to think through  this journey, I became a little more savvy about social media.  I will talk with you all about this tomorrow (Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk). But here's a preview- It is not just language that catches on, it is also im

Okay you guys, seriously?????

I started working on my presentation.  Hmmmm, how should I begin, I pondered aloud.   "Oh, you should say 'Hi, Welcome to Chili's!," Olivia advised. I looked this up. What. In. The. World.   And it got millions of hits and people imitated it.  And this guy was FAMOUS before this. Speaking of famous guys and famous memes.  Here's the   origin behind the one above. Half an hour later...

I keep hearing about Tik Tok and how it's the newer, better Vine.  So, I check it out.  Half an hour later, here's what I learned. 1. It is quite entertaining. 2. I am not that creative.  The first person to create an idea is wicked clever.  And I so admire all the peeps who take their own spin on it.  Super fun. And then I did about 15 more minutes of "research" and here's the thing-if I wasn't a grown person, I would spend so much time with this. And so that I don't because I really need to read your blogs, I'll end with Tik Tok is pretty cool.

And then this showed up in the newspaper today...

Here is the article from the web.  My comments are in red.  The highlighted ones were not in the newspaper article.  I think it is kind of interesting which ones they omitted. What is a VSCO girl? OK, boomer. A parents' dictionary to teen slang words, sksksksksk Rasha Ali David Oliver Amy Haneline USA TODAY If you clicked on this story, it's probably because you have no idea what your kids are saying. Hi! Welcome to the club. Thanks to the internet – mostly  TikTok , let's be real – new slang words and phrases are popping up all the time, making it hard to have a conversation with your offspring.  A sample conversation with a teen : "Oh, that VSCO girl? She's definitely not in my squad. But I stan her swagger even though those scrunchies are trash. Hundo P. OK, boomer?" Translation : A trendy girl is not in your child's group of friends, but she appreciates her confidence even though her big ponytail holders are terrible. She 100% t

Hiiiiyeeee!

I didn't post Friday because I was watching TV with my daughter.  We were watching our favorite show-RuPaul's Drag Race. An interesting trend right now is that phrases from drag culture (which are also from African American culture-particularly women) are popping up on Twitter and are now mainstream.  In fact, I have heard students saying these phrases up and down the halls and I have to giggle to myself because I doubt many of them know what they are saying.  So here are few favorites and what they mean (just so you know). YAS! - This word was created as an exclamation to yell at drag queens while they were performing as a sign of support and encouragement. Spill the T/Tea-S lang for the word truth or gossip. Used in a sentence: "Girl, I'm about to spill the tea on everything that happened last night." Gagging-  Used when something is so fierce, you can’t help but want to gag from the overload of extreme fierceosity. Sickening- Amazing, in

Did you know...

...that the average person swallows 8 spiders while they are sleeping? Totally gross. Did you also know that that is an urban myth? According to snopes.com  there is no way that spiders would get near us when we are sleeping with our mouths open.  That is because if our mouths are open, we are snoring and if we are snoring, we are causing a vibration that would cause the spiders not to come near us. Did you also know that this urban myth, in 2013, spawned a meme on Tumblr that not only is my daughter's ABSOLUTE FAVORITE but also taught an entire generation about statistics? “average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted” Spiders Georg was huge on Tumblr (spawning 90,000 posts) and even got his own Facebook page. In our house, any time someone gives a statistic, Spid

Since you asked...it's Gif (with a hard G)

The discussion began with changing the cat on Everett's blog.  Here's the Gif I used :) But do I call it a Gif (with a hard G like Gift) or a Gif (with a soft J like Jiff)? According to Newsweek (article link ) ,  it should be the hard G, like Gift.   Reasons: *The  "G" in GIF stands for Graphic , which is pronounced with a hard G. It's Graphic Interchange Format. *"Gift" is GIF's closest neighbor.   *A computer would pronounce the acronym with a hard "G." *Our brains logically just want to pronounce it with a hard G.  But the creator feels otherwise.  In his acceptance of the Webby Lifetime achievement award ( Not going to lie-kind of cool to think about the real people who created the things that we use everyday and that there are awards for this stuff!) . He says (Jiff) I think I will probably still say it with the hard G because it makes sense to my brain.
